Combine

This weekend was the 1st days of the combine for the NFL teams to see the college players do their best to attract these coaches with their athleticism and smarts of the game. The first day was the offensive linemen and tight ends which had them doing the 40 yard dash, long jump, vertical jump and different position drills to evaluate the players and see if it will help them to get recognized. This is only the beginning to their road to fame and fortune to becoming an NFL star. They have all the times and scores posted on ESPN and Twitter in this article. This is a fun time for people to watch and see these athletes run around and strut their stuff in front of these coaches and general managers. It takes us all back when we played sports at one time or another.

UCF football player on American Idol

This isn't exactly relevant to current college football news, but just enough to talk about it. Michael Lynche a former University of Central Florida football player from 2001-2002 was a very positive attribution to the team. However he had to stop playing and take care of his mother who was ill at the time after the 2002 season. The reason I wanted to talk about this is because Michael Lynche has made it to the top 24 singers in American Idol, the fact that an ex football player is good enough for American Idol is something special in itself. When you think of big bulky football players, you don't think that they would have much of a voice. Michael Lynche has clearly broken that barrier by making it this far in American Idol which is something worth talking about. American Idol is one of the most talked about subjects on Twitter so i would find it ironic that both college football and American Idol has found themselves talked about in the same sentence.

32 team conference

There are 119 teams in division 1 football and are all split up into different conferences regarding their geographic location. The Bleacher Report discussed a hypothetical situation for the NCAA to think about, which was to have 32 of the best teams in D1 to only play. This would cause an uproar across the nation and possibly the world because of the popularity in college football. It also makes it hard to want to follow a team you never liked before. Of course this is all hypothetical, but it definitely leaves room for conversation and discussion among twitter users. The slide show that explained and showed what teams would be in that 32 team conference made sense but to leave out 87 teams on the table like that would make it impossible for students to want to go to those schools that don't have a football team.

BCS tryin for the playoffs.

The Bowl Championship Series is trying to get the playoffs again, which would mean that instead of the bowls at the end of the season there would be brackets like there is in basketball or division 1AA football. If this is true and actually stands, it takes away that college football stands for. College football stands for something more than just an ethical way of playing sports, its different and makes it more entertaining for the true football fan. If this stands it will be a terrible way to end a season. Ultimately, not very many things would change, except for four teams having to play an extra game or two, a whole lot of coaches making less money, and a lot of fans having to face the facts that their programs aren't as good as they thought they were. We need to keep things the way they are. This has been an on going debate for years and with facebook and twitter being a huge social media connection to the world, espn has done what they need to do to post this on their twitter page so fans like me can see what it is they are thinking about doing.

Myron Rolle's path to the draft

Myron Rolle went to Florida State University and was a star football player and played all four years. Florida State isn't a school that is known for its academic prestige, but for Myron's academic genius he single handedly brought up Florida States credibility by becoming the first athlete from Florida State to be a Rhodes Scholar and have the opportunity to study at Oxford University for a year. he is now able to enter the NFL draft after his year of leave, and will be a high draft pick because of his ability to play football. ESPN has been covering him ever since he was in high school and college. The senior bowl was an important try out for him to showcase his skills on the field. he is so dynamic that you can see any clip of him on youtube and will always be a legend at Florida State.

National Signing Day

Yesterday was the last day for colleges all over the country to get their recruits to sign to go to their school, aka national signing day. this is an exciting day for college and university coaches because this is the day that they finally find out if their hard work of recruiting all year long will finally pay off or not. recruiting is a long process for college coaches that try to get the best of the bets high school athletes to come to their university. this process has to be done very carefully in order to grab this certain recruit and have them interested in your school. the coaches have to watch a lot of video tape on the kids that are good enough and interested in that school. critiquing these athletes isn't as easy as one would think. there is a lot that you have to look for in a certain athlete. such as speed, agility, strength and overall football skills. once coaches become interested in these athletes they prepare visits for this recruit would go to the school to see what it has to offer. once they get beyond that stage they then schedule a date to go to that recruits house and try to wow them one more time before the recruit start making serious decisions about what school they want to go to. national signing day is a big day for college sports because we as fans get to see at first hand what kind of athlete this school is going to get and see what kind of investment the school is making on this recruit. for me i find it interesting because they have a show on it so i can see which kids they really drool over and see what they have to say about why they have made the selection that they have made. it was always a position i wanted to be in when i was younger, to be able to go on big time recruiting visits and be a big time recruit in the country. so much goes into national signing day and they always do a great job on covering the day and the most important stories. Some of the recruiters sometimes Tweet about their school status and where they might end up. it would be hard to find those tweets because there are so many recruits out there that put up posts about where they might end up. ESPN has covered athletes and their tweeting on the show. it would be called twitter tuesday but that mostly was covered during football season. ESPN likes to keep up with the technology and see what other athletes say. because it is so popular, it can get some of these athletes in trouble with what they say on their pages, thats why some coaches don't let the athletes even have a twitter account because anybody can see what yours saying.

Senior Bowl

This is the most important time of the year for NFL teams. It is when they have to figure out what players they want to draft for the new year. This all starts with the senior bowl that was held over the weekend in Mobile Alabama. The senior bowl is when the best of the best seniors from all over the country are on either the north or the south team, depending on where they geographical region of the school they went to is. They spend about a week practicing and preparing for the game and meeting up with different professional teams to see if they are good for that team. The senior bowl has come along way because now the players have to see this as a job interview and not just an all star game where they can relax and have fun. It has to be taken seriously at all times because you never know who is watching you play or watching how hard you work during practice which is where the coaches make most of their assessments about that athlete. However, it is making college football players become more competitive at the college level so that they could play in the senior bowl and will give them the best opportunity to move on to the next level which is the NFL. College teams like to market their players as much as they can so that they can go back to their high school recruits and say this player made it to the NFL, you can too. Its a trickle effect that goes from the NFL to college football to high school football. They all connect to each other in some way shape or form. This is why college football is so great for this country and the NFL.
